Mum, Why is Lola Bunny Wearing Clothes?
As of you didn’t already know we recently took a trip to the Gold Coast in Queensland.
As a result some Theme Parks were certainly on our list of places to visit, one of which was Movie World.
We did the usual things, went on all the rides, ate all the food, lined up in all the queues, took photos with all the characters and bought all the souvenirs.
Mr Barbie, always likes buying things for the house and in this instance one product that caught his eye was some pretty innocuous placemats….or so I thought.
Tonight while Miss M, who is 16 was setting the table, with the said “Movie World” placemats, she said to me “Mum have you seen these placemats”?
“Yes” I replied, rather dismissively…
“No” she said….”Have you REALLY seen these placemats”?
The reiteration caused me to reconsider my answer…. Had I really had a good look at the placemats?
The easy answer was, of course not! Hubby bought them and stashed them in a plastic bag..I hadn’t looked at them since!
As I finally took a good look at the placemats, Miss M said “Notice anything unusual?”…..
I looked hard….nup nothing was jumping out at me!
We had Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, The Tassie Devil and The Little Frog looking fantastic. Sylvester, Tweety and the Coyote all looking particularly mischievous and Lola Bunny in her tight t-shirt, boobs pushed up, tight shorts with Daffy’s strategically placed fingers in front of her…. Hang on a minute!!!!!
Why is she dressed to impress while every other MALE character is in the bollocky??
Miss M had raised a very interesting question… Is there a double standard even amongst cartoon characters?
Why is it OK for the male characters to appear fun loving and naked, while Lola is off to the side dressed on her alluring tank top and tight shorts. Sure she looks happy, but is she really??
Then Miss M went on to talk about the “free the nipple” campaign...we effectively went from placemats to nipples in the space of 30 seconds.
This campaign is designed to empower women to stand against oppression and censorship. After all men can walk down the street without a shirt on, why not women?
In the end we sat down to dinner and ate off the Looney Tunes characters (that doesn’t sound quite right) but I still couldn’t get the thought out of my head that I was now eating my dinner off a naked duck and rabbit…
I guess Miss T (who is 9) summed it up the best when I asked her why Lola was wearing clothes but the others were not.
“Mum it’s because girls are just more intelligent than boys”………guess I can’t argue with that logic!
Do you think there is a double standard when it comes to boys V’s girls?
